In Devon, like Cornwall, many businesses are referred to as SMEs – Small and Medium Enterprises. Depending on which definition is used an SME could have anywhere between 50 and 500 employees and a turnover between £6.5 million and £50 million. In reality the likelihood is that the business you run is actually a micro business defined as a business enterprise that has between 1 and 10 employees, and a turnover of less than £2 million. These include small business owners such as sole proprietors who trade as, for example, plumbers, dance teachers, car mechanics, builders and hairdressers. Whilst we prepare accounts for all types of business of all sizes we recognise that we would not necessarily understand the technical jargon of an electrician or the term for dance moves used by a dance teacher so we don’t assume that our clients will understand taxation terms and so endeavour to make all of our communications jargon free.
